Things starting to look up for young people as graduate vacancies rise by 11%

Graduate and trainee vacancies are up 11% compared to this time last year, according to the latest figures from totaljobs.com.The barometer figures from Q1 2014 show the increase in job opportunities has triggered a fall in competition for jobs, with the number of applications per job falling by 22% compared to the same period last year.

Mike Fetters, graduate director at totaljobs.com, says: “It’s encouraging to see more vacancies available for graduates and people looking for entry-level roles. It looks like things are really starting to look up for young people.”

Meanwhile, in other news pointing to a more optimistic jobs market, specialist professional recruiter Robert Walters reports that its UK jobs index showed a year-on-year rise of 8% in the number of advertised UK job vacancies in the first quarter of 2014 compared to Q1 of 2013.
