With competition for graduate jobs being as fierce as it currently is, the need to stand out from other candidates is of paramount importance. One way to do this is through gaining experience either through work or study in another country. Only recently in the Guardian Newspaper, it featured an article about how international experience can really enhance your CV. Therefore if you are considering moving to pastures new, postgraduate study abroad may be an option you want to explore further.
If you are interested in studying in the USA in particular, there are currently two funding streams available to help you with this. They are:-
Fulbright Awards for Postgraduate Study
The Fulbright Commision, which was set up to enable educational exchange opportunities between the UK and the USA, has just announced recently that from the academic year 2013 – 14, they will be significantly increasing the value of their Fulbright Awards to make it easier for UK citizens to apply to carry out postgraduate study in the USA. In particular Scholarships for Postgraduates pursuing a Master’s, PhD or a period as a visiting researcher will now include a fully-funded first year.
At the core of the Fulbright Programme remains the element of choice: applicants will tell them what project they’d like to carry out, and where in the US they want to go. They welcome applications from any discipline to any US Higher Education Institution and continue to select for academic excellence, ambassadorial skills, extracurricular/community interests, leadership potential and a desire to further the Fulbright mission to develop cultural understanding between the UK and USA.
Aside from funding, a Fulbright Award provides grantees with a thorough cultural orientation programme, a range of memberships, sickness/accident coverage, visa sponsorship, on the ground support in the US, Fulbright mentors and exceptional alumni opportunities.
Receiving a Fulbright Award opens many doors and provides unparalleled global networking opportunities – A Fulbright Scholar is a Fulbright Scholar for life!
